The importance of pregnancy wellness (plus a giveaway!)

Let’s chat about wellness during one of the most physically and emotionally stressful times in a woman’s life: pregnancy. For a lot of women, this time can be so exciting and special. However, it can also mean higher levels of stress and anxiety, low self esteem, crazy hormones, sickness, pains, and burnout. A focus on pregnancy wellness is so important for the mental, emotional, and physical health of women.

How does pregnancy affect mental health?

With all of the stressors involved in pregnancy, it’s no wonder that it can impact negatively on mental health. Having so many physical and emotional changes in a short period can increase the risk of mental health issues developing. Eating disorders and body image concerns are often triggered, anxiety levels can rise, and the risk of depression is high. The rate of postnatal depression in Australia is currently one in seven. One in ten women experience antenatal anxiety and depression during their pregnancy. This is a lot of new mums who are struggling beyond the typical baby blues! It’s incredibly important that pregnant women take care of their emotional health just as much as their physical health.

Information overload

Growing a tiny human inside of you can bring out the worrywart in anyone. All of the information on what you ‘should’ and ‘shouldn’t’ be doing can be overwhelming. There will always be 100 opinions on what is the best thing for you, your pregnancy wellness, or your baby. Do you really need to hear about all of the billions of things you are doing wrong? Do you need to get anxious about how anxiety is bad for the foetus? Step away from Google and get your information from the right (accredited!) sources.

  2. Sounds wonderful. I try not to give advice to pregnant friends, unless they actually ask. I could write a book on what not to do, just going on the advice my mother-in-law bestowed upon me on what I should be doing while pregnant with my first and beyond. There was honey or brandy on the dummy for starters.

    Because it’s so important, yet often overlooked, to remember to take care of ourselves. A wellness program is a great aid in maintaining our happiness and sanity.

  5. This sounds like such a great program–it’s so true that pregnancy (and after!) are so emotionally and physically taxing. A focus on wellness during pregnancy can have such great benefits not only to the mom, but also to the little one! Will share this with my preggo friends 🙂

  6. I’m expecting my first baby (due in Feb 17) and feeling a little lost and confused because I have no family here in Australia (my mum and sister live in France). I bought a few books, installed 4 apps on my phone (yes 4!)and spend much of my spare time on google. I end up even more confused than I was in the first place.

  8. Wish this had been around when I was expecting my little miracles. Despite them both being much wanted and loved, I had depression when I was pregnant with #2 which only got worse after the birth 🙁
